The article presents the results of studying new inbred lines from a mid-late maturity group, which were created at the Maize Research Institute – Knezha by means of chemical mutagenesis and classic pedigree selection.
The combining ability of twenty-one mid-late maize lines for quantitative traits directly related to the yield was assessed by the Savchenko method (1978). The lines were tested in three testers by different genetic groups – Lancaster and Stiff Stalk Synthetic. The crosses were obtained in 2011 on an experimental field in the Institute. The trials with experimental crosses of F1 were carried out in 2012 and 2013 under conditions of non-irrigation and plant density of 4,400 plants/da.
The KC 09 31 line displayed high General and Specific Combining Ability (GCA, SCA) for length of the ear and the XM 09 10 line – for kernel weight per ear. The KC 09 31 line had a high specific combining ability (SCA) for the number of kernels in a row. Due to the genetic control of the parameters studied, some recommendations were made for the inclusion of these newly created inbred lines in specific breeding programs.
The lines with high GCA are suitable testers in the early stages of breeding for such characters and can be donors for the creation of synthetic populations in a mid-late maturity group. The lines with high SCA are suitable components for a direct heterosis selection for these parameters. The aim of the study is the analysis of CA for yield elements of new mid-late maize lines in relation to their more purposeful use in different directions of heterosis selection.
