Abstract

The dynamics of the genetic resources in pig breeding in Bulgaria depending on the development of the sector for the period 1900 – 2000 has been described. The conclusion was made that during each considered stage was characterized by a particular level of breed formation and loss of available genetic resources.
The breeding of four native Bulgarian pig breeds (White Lop-eared, Motley Dermanska pig, Bulgarian White and Mangalitza) has been abandoned for lack of foresight and wrong breeding policy which led to the loss of valuable genetic material. It was recommended that a strategy for the development of pig breeding and for the preservation of the gene pool should be elaborated with a view to the EU Common Agricultural Policy and global trends in the sector.
