Abstract
With the intensification of the animal production, the autochthonous breeds are being replaced by more productive commercial ones. This leads to a loss of genotypes and even whole breeds, which can be valuable for the animal breeding in the future. The estimation of the risk of loss of genetic resources is important for undertaking actions to preserve the endangered breeds. Various systems for estimating the risk on national and international level were developed in the last forty years, and new systems are still being developed. In this paper we review some of the main systems, discussing the issues related to their application in Bulgaria.
