Abstract

The paper reveals the present status of the controlled population of East Bаlkan pigs bred in Bulgaria. It was established that in 2009 the total number of pigs subject to controlled selection was 1858 heads, while in 2012 it was 1216 heads. Compared with 2006, the reduction of the population in 2009 was 41.9% and in 2012-62%. Herein we point out the causes for this decline and accentuate the need for urgent development of protective mechanisms for preservation and increase of the East Balkan pigs through changes in legislation aimed at extending the legally approved breeding regions and developing well-organized programs and projects to subsidize ecological meat production.
